West was all about making a big statement while keeping it very minimal for the first live rendition of “Blood on the Leaves.” In contrast to his jolting performances of the Yeezus single “Black Skinhead,” which came complete with threatening hooded figures and ferocious barking dogs, the controversial rapper, producer and self-proclaimed “Michael Jordan of music” which Jared Leto so graciously pointed out during his introduction turned down both the intensity and the lights for “Blood on the Leaves.” The song began with a very dim light illuminating only ‘Ye’s face, with the rest of the set shrouded in black, as the haunting refrain of the “Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees” came through the speakers in Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. Not until the beat of the song dropped were viewers finally able to see that Steve McQueen’s “Lynching Tree” was the only thing that Kanye had commissioned as his backdrop for the night. The painting depicts a tree outside of New Orleans where slaves were once hung, with their graves littered across the ground under the leaves. “Blood on the Leaves” samples Nina Simone’s 1965 jazz cover of Billie Holiday’s 1939 recording “Strange Fruit,” which was heavy with commentary on racism, slavery and the rise in the number of lynchings in the United States. As the eerie line “bodies swinging in the Southern breeze” (in other words the “strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees”) played back, Kanye’s completely blacked-out outline danced wildly to and fro in front of the painting.

Kanye West’s VMAs Performance Brings ‘Blood On The Leaves’ To Barclays
Miley Cyrus, after horrifying the US nation with her twerking , skipped any after parties for the MTV VMAs on Sunday 25th August. Her reason was not coping with crushing embarrassment but, according to sources, she had a last minute date in the recording studio with Kanye West. It seems West was “in a creative mood” according to sources and “just decided to capture their creative engery and record right after the show. They decided that night.” Miley Cyrus pre-catastrophic performance on the red carpet at the MTV VMAs. For West’s sake, let’s hope the decision came before he saw Cyrus perform!
A Kanye West-Miley Cyrus collaboration?
Case in point, this genuinely sweet interaction between multiple-VMA winners Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and the mercurial Kanye West, which occurred backstage following West’s performance of “Blood on the Leaves” . It’s just a quick conversation between artists, but it shows that, no matter how big Mack & Lewis have gotten, they’re still fans, first and foremost. “Thank you for raising the bar as an artist, appreciate it” Macklemore tells Kanye. He then praised his performance, saying “You killed that sh–.” And despite what you might think about Kanye, he was incredibly gracious, thanking Macklemore for his words, shaking hands with Lewis, and embracing “Same Love” singer Mary Lambert, who gives ‘Ye a kiss on the cheek. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis would win three Moonmen at Sunday’s show, and performed their equality anthem “Same Love” on the VMA stage with an assist from special guest Jennifer Hudson onstage. Kanye, on the other hand, basically breezed in and out of Barclays, doing a somber version of “Blood,” then spending a few minutes in the artist VIP area before departing.
What Happened When Macklemore Met Kanye Backstage At The VMAs?
Kennedy August 28, 2013, 2:26 p.m. File this under things that probably wont end well: Kanye West has tapped Miley Cyrus for a collaboration. While pundits are suddenly interested in the phenomenon that is twerking (seriously, folks, its not new despite what countless think pieces are currently stating), the singer thats just now introducing the tawdry dance to Middle America has teamed up with a rapper whos polarized the same audience. After Cyrus deliciously trashy train wreck of a performance at Sundays MTV Video Music Awards, the singer reportedly skipped her own post-VMA party to log studio time for a top-secret collaboration, according to the New York Post. West, who also performed on the telecast, turned out to be the collaborator. Her reps, however, didn’t answer the more important question of who twerked in her honor at the party she skipped.
